The Prophet is one of the most famous works by the Lebanese-American poet, philosopher, and writer Kahlil Gibran. First published in 1923, it has been translated into over fifty languages and remains one of the most widely read and influential books in the world.
The book is a collection of 26 poetic essays, delivered by the protagonist, Almustafa, a prophet who has lived in the city of Orphalese for twelve years. As he prepares to embark on a ship back to his homeland, the people of the city, who have come to love and respect him, seek his wisdom on various aspects of life. Each essay addresses a different topic, ranging from love, freedom, and work, to pain, joy, and death.
